A Legacy that Binds
George W. Truett’s Legacy and Influence Through the Generations
As one of the most influential pastors in Baptist history and a central figure in American Christian heritage, George Washington Truett casts a vision for gospel witness and local church ministry that echoes both in name and principle throughout the halls of Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary.
As an alumnus of Baylor, Truett has long been associated with the University. Shortly after enrolling at Baylor in 1893, Truett was called to become the pastor of East Waco Baptist Church. Soon after graduating in 1897, he became the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, where he would remain as pastor for 47 years until his death.
Throughout his 50-year ministry, people came from all over to hear him preach and did their best to follow the example he set for Christian living. Though rewarded with many accolades during his lifetime and entrusted with numerous leadership roles, including the presidency of the Baptist World Alliance, Truett never sought to be anything other than God’s messenger doing God’s will, as God directed.
In 1990, Baylor’s Board of Trustees reserved with the Secretary of State of Texas the name “George W. Truett Theological Seminary.” On August 28, 1994, George W. Truett Theological Seminary opened its doors to begin training students for global work and witness.
Now in its third decade, students, faculty, and staff feel the presence of its namesake through its commitment to rigorous theological education and intentional preparation of ministers. Specific investment in developing future pastors and church leaders in practical ways happens not only in the classroom
but also through mentoring, residencies, and service in local church pulpits.
“To know the will of God is the greatest knowledge. To do the will of God is the greatest achievement.”
– George W. Truett
The Seminary embodies the values Truett exemplified by prioritizing the training and support of local church ministry, fostering spiritual formation at an individual level, and promoting diversity and global engagement through its student body and connection to local and global organizations.
More than a name on a diploma, Truett’s legacy lives on in the calling of every student who has and will walk through the halls of the seminary that bears his name. His love for the Church, passion for the gospel, and unwavering commitment to God’s will continue to shape the work done at Truett Seminary. Generation after generation of students will carry forward a legacy that binds the work of equipping God-called men and women for gospel ministry in and alongside Christ’s Church.
