Woven in Community
The Reach of Truett’s Extensions
Truett Seminary’s extension campuses in Houston and San Antonio are integral threads in the fabric of the Truett community. As these locations expand, the Seminary is able to prepare and equip students while making education more accessible for future ministers and leaders across Texas.
United by a shared commitment to academic rigor, spiritual formation, and missional impact, the extension campuses embody the vision of the Seminary by training thoughtful, faithful Christian ministers called to serve the Church in Texas and beyond.
As Steve Turley, PhD, director of Truett in Houston notes, “A key feature of Truett Houston is that all of our students are already engaged in vocational ministry. These students would not be able to attend Truett at all if we were not offering rigorous instruction here in Houston. Being present in Houston allows us to train today’s ministers and, through them, have a significant impact in churches all over this giant metro area.”
In Houston, Truett has become a key partner with churches like The Woodlands Methodist Church, Houston Northwest Church, First Baptist Church of Kingwood, The Church Without Walls, and South Main Baptist Church. Many of their ministers and pastors are enrolled at the extension campus.
Rusty Freeman, DMin, Scott L. Engle Director of the Wesley House of Studies, shared, “As Truett Seminary deepens its relationships in Houston, it has offered a growing group of Wesleyan students a place to learn and build valuable relationships not just with their coworkers, but with others in the larger church community of Houston.”
Other partnerships continue to flourish. South Main Baptist Church co-hosts the annual N.T. Wright Summer Intensive, a theological deep dive that draws students, pastors, and lay leaders alike. The Church Without Walls also welcomes Truett Houston each year to its IC3 conference, a gathering that celebrates innovation and excellence in ministry.
Just a few hours away, Truett’s San Antonio campus is home to a vibrant and growing group of students who are pursuing theological education while remaining deeply engaged in their local communities—whether in churches, nonprofits, or other Christian institutions.
“San Antonio is a special place,” said Bobby Contreras, MACM ’25, pastor at Alamo Heights Baptist Church. “The Seminary has placed an emphasis on biblical education here in the city that I call home. I am able to be equipped myself as a pastor and then take what I’ve learned to equip the community I was called to.”
To strengthen its ties with the broader San Antonio community, Truett recently hosted a Friends of Truett Dinner, where over 80 partners, friends, students, and alumni gathered to celebrate the campus’s growth. The evening featured student testimonials, remarks from Seminary leadership, and reflections on partnerships with churches like Trinity Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of San Antonio.
“Our future at Truett San Antonio is bright,” said Dr. Joe Rangel, PhD, director of Truett in San Antonio. “We look forward to building a thriving learning community through our local churches, alumni, donors, and key faith leaders in the greater San Antonio community.”
As Truett Seminary continues to grow across Texas, its extension campuses stand as living testimonies to the Seminary’s mission. These communities are not just learning hubs—they are catalysts for transformation, rooted in local connection and reaching far beyond. With each new partnership, each student story, and each shared moment, Truett’s network becomes more deeply woven into the fabric of the greater Church.
